News From The Isle Of Eriskay

Ever since local resident Michael Cross attended a first-aid course last year which included a brief introduction to a defibrillation machine, he quickly became convinced of its importance within a community, particularly the more isolated and started a campaign to try and obtain one for the island and its inhabitants.

He made contact with the manufacturers, Cardiac Science, which led him to Scottish H.A.R.T and after a number of discussions with them and attending local meetings on Eriskay, he arranged for them to come over to the island to give a talk and a demonstration of the machine and meet some of the islanders.  This was achieved on April 16 and subsequent to that, Cardiac Science issued the following press release:

“The islanders have agreed to get involved in fund-raising so we agreed to hand over the AED at our first visit,” said Wilma Gunn. “With both Neilina and Michael dedicated to carry the fund-raising forward over the next few months and support the work that Scottish HART is doing.”
Mrs. Gunn also revealed that although Eriskay is the first on the programme, Scottish HART is determined that other islands and communities should have the safety cover that a defibrillator gives and the team will return when other groups raise the capital to fund the programme.
Those trained to certificate level on Eriskay were: Jonathan Campbell, Michael Cross, Pat Cross, David Campbell, Jamie Campbell, Iain MacKinnon, Neilina MacInnes and Christopher Campbell.

Inset are Neilina MacInnes and David Campbell. All are certified PAD (Public Access Defibrillation) scheme members.

St Mary’s Loch is in the remote Yarrow Valley where it can take over an hour to get an ambulance to a cardiac arrest victim. This scheme attracted 17 volunteers.
